Bach Stradivarius C Trumpet C180L229 W/ Blackburn Leadpipe!
One of several professional C trumpets we are offering for sale. This is a Bach Stradivarius C180L229—a nickel and brass lacquer horn with an large bore and 229 bell—a bigger, brighter and more focused sound than the more common 239ML with tons of projection, but kept nicely under control and darkened up a bit by the Louisville (Blackburn) 19-350 lead pipe. S/n 227XXX makes this about 1982. This was a pro player’s horn, who also added an Amado water key to decrease resistance and improve response. It is in very good condition: lacquer has lots of wear as seen in the photos and there are very light imperfections left over from very careful, minor dent removal done in October of 2023, along with a full ultrasonic cleaning. Thumb saddle appears to have resoldered—perhaps moved or repaired or replaced. Just further through our shop where it was chem cleaned just for the heck of it, detergent cleaned, lubed, and had all new tuning slide O-rings and piston felts installed. All tuning slides are free, valves are fast and smooth with no problems at all, and the compression is excellent measuring at 0.6 on the leak detector when freshly lubed—which is better than most used trumpets and excellent for an vintage Strad. (And that’s with plain old Al Cass oil. It would be even tighter with some Hetman’s Classic synthetic oil.) Comes in a Bach single case, but if you prefer no case or a new ProTec triple case, please message us directly. Between the large bore, the 229 bell and the Blackburn pipe, this is a huge-sounding but responsive C that will cut above the orchestra and fill the largest concert venue. Not available new in this exact configuration, but the stock 229 sells for $3,999 at the discount dealers. So . . . snatch up a great vintage horn with a $200 leadpipe, and still save more than $2,000!
