Rare 1957 Holton Model 58 Bass Trumpet!
Need a Christmas present for the trumpet player who has everything? Here’s a hard-to-find Holton Model 58 Bb bass trumpet for sale! S/n 304XXX should be 1957. This is a project I started a while ago. We got a lot of the dents out, freed the tuning slides, replaced the water key corks, and then got swamped. I had been planning to strip the lacquer off and make it a raw brass horn, but I’m ready to admit that I’m never going to get around to that. It’s in generally good condition: lots of lacquer wear as seen in the photos, small dents and dings mostly along the main curve after the lead pipe—which has had a lot of dent work done—and along the bell bow, which has also had some dents removed. All tunings slides are free, valves are smooth with decent compression, and would be a bit tighter with some Hetman’s Classic synthetic oil. Plays as you would expect from a trumpet with an identity crisis: plays in the trombone range, but with a lot more focus, projection, and “trumpet sound” than a valve trombone or flugabone. Takes a standard, small-shank mouthpiece, and includes a vintage Holton 47 in excellent condition, and the original case with wear but structurally very good. A fun way to add that trombone part to your trumpet repertoire, super hard to find on the used market, and just in time for Christmas!
