Vintage Bach NY Stradivarius 180S42 Silver Trumpet
One of the rarest and most collectible trumpets we are offering for sale! This is a New York Bach Stradivarius model 42 Bb trumpet. S/n 80XX makes this a Bronx-made horn at roughly 1948, pre-dating the Mt. Vernon Strads. Per old Bach catalogs, the 42 bell is designed for a warmer, lighter, French sound. It is in excellent condition: a little evidence of dent removal right at the very edge of the bell rim but right close to the edge and not up the flare at all. A tiny ding hidden behind the first-valve slide which is completely hidden when assembled. Not sure if this was originally lacquered or silver, but it has obviously been completely and professionally replated in the past few years, with the silver still at 99.9% with little if any wear at all. Stamped as an ML bore and measures 0.459". Leadpipe is unmarked but the few examples of this I've found show that it is likely a #25. Just through the shop where it was disassembled, chem cleaned, detergent cleaned, lubed, polished, and had all new tuning slide O-rings, piston felts, and water key cork installed. Stop rod bumper and nuts ARE included; I forgot to install them prior to taking the photos. Valves are fast and smooth, compression measures 2.5 on the magnahelic when freshly oiled, which is about normal for a vintage horn. A valve rebuild would make it like new, but please see the video to see that it plays nicely and sounds exceptional just as it is. Note that this horn is oiled with and plays best with SYNTHETIC oil, and you should use the same or thoroughly clean the pistons and casings prior to switching to a petroleum-based product. All tuning slides are free including the third-valve dump slide. Brass valve guides. Sending this in a vintage case with a cracked section in the top panel but otherwise structurally sound--mostly just to protect it during shipping. Plays with a warmer tone than a 37 but not Teutonic and dark, but just warm and pleasing with little resistance and tons of projection! An amazing, hard-to-find horn from an amazing period in the nicest condition you find!
