Vintage Buffet Crampon Pre-R14-1/2 Clarinet W/ Leather Overhaul!
One of several professional clarinets we are offering for sale. This is a Buffet Crampon pre-R13 Master Bore w/ extra keys, also known as a pre-R14-1/2. It has some extra keys, including the forked Eb mechanism, articulated G#/C#, and an extra trill on the lower. S/n 210XX makes it roughly 1937, and it is in surprisingly excellent condition: wood body has minor wear but no chips, cracks, or repairs—a testimony to the quality of grenadilla and aging process on vintage Buffet’s compared to current ones. Keys are nickel silver (German silver) which doesn’t polish up as bright as plated keys, but also does not wear through, and are in excellent condition. Best of all, this one has just been through the shop where it was disassembled, cleaned, bore oiled, lubed, hand-polished, had all new tenon corks installed, springs retensioned, key materials replaced as needed, and was repadded with white kid leather pads except for a couple where premium cork was more appropriate, in an effort to maintain the very traditional feel and tone of the period. Plays very nicely across the entire instrument--more open and bold than most R13’s, with just the standard Buffet intonation quirks. Plays right at A439.5 for me with the included barrel, but I tend to play Buffets a smidge flat, so I’m including a couple of tuning rings in case you need to pull the barrel out a bit. (And we have about eight clarinet barrels for sale separately as well, including a couple from the same period!) Comes in what is likely the original case which is also in excellent condition, including the leather handles which are rarely found intact. A great clarinet with some extra fingering options to make those tricky passages a bit more accessible, and rarely found in this condition!
