Vintage Selmer France A Clarinet W/ Valentino Overhaul
One of several professional and vintage clarinets we are offering for sale. This is a vintage Henri Selmer France A clarinet (key of A.) S/n K54XX makes this 1931--one of the earliest Selmers we have ever offered, and the very first year of the change from the Buffet-style logo to the newer wreath logo. The model number is a bit elusive, but catalogs from 1928 and 1936 would have called this a “No. 1” in A, so we can probably run with that. It is in surprising good condition for it’s age: wood body is a great billet of aged grenadilla with a tight, straight grain and no chips, cracks, repairs or bore damage. Tenons show little wear and there is no wobble between joints. Appears to be nickel plated, which again is around 99% intact with just a little wear. The clarinet seems to have had very little, very careful use during its history. Best of all, it is just through the shop in June 2025 where it was disassembled, cleaned, bore oiled, lubed, springs replaced or retensioned, and had all new tenon corks installed, and was repadded in a combination of cork and Valentino Master’s Series synthetic pads—one of the longest-lasting, quietest pads available. Plays very well across the entire instrument with unexpectedly good intonation, and more open and less resistant than most modern clarinet—likely due to it being a larger bore. Very big, dark sound with excellent projection. A hard to find clarinet from this period and in this condition, especially in the key of A, and the perfect match for your 1930’s Bb!
